During Grand Rounds this week, we had the pleasure of hosting our Brian Gibler visiting lecturer Dr. John Deleda who Spoke about Henry Ford Hospitals COVID-19 response and the leadership lessons he learned over his career. Dr. Della Porta then gave us the rundown on different blood products and using TEG. We discussed PPROM, Breech delivery, and neonatal resuscitation with Dr. Crawford. The CPC showdown with Dr. Minges and Dr. Brower ended as a case of Hyperleukocystosis and Leukostasis. We ended the day with a talk from our PEM colleagues on inborn errors of metabolism.

This week’s Grand Rounds started with a great Airway Grand Rounds lecture by Dr. Carleton. Dr. Frankenfeld led a discussion on face and mouth infections followed by Dr. Li’s Taming the SRU lecture on loperamide overdose. We had a great lecture by Dr. Thompson about healthcare change methodology. The week wrapped up with pediatric simulation focusing on ultrasound.

We had another great week in Grand Rounds, starting with a QI/KT presentation from Drs. Hunt and Pulvino about Tumor Lysis Syndrome. Next, Dr. Meigh gave a great presentation about TORCH infections and Dr. Spigner gave his R4 Capstone lecture on pre-hospital sepsis care. We welcomed a guest speaker, Dr. Henning, from podiatry who discussed a number podiatry emergencies. Finally, the week wrapped up with a simulation of an inferior STEMI in trauma.

This week, we started things off with a great Quarterly Sim led by our faculty. The oral boards cases, led by Drs Stettler and Roche, involved an acute presentation of holiday heart, a post-partum patient with flash pulmonary edema, and a very questionable spider bite. The simulation, led by Drs Fernandez, Hill and Stolz, focused on two patients that were in shock: one due to a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and one due to a pericardial tamponade. We then moved on to the pediatric side of things, where Dr. Gleimer discussed neonatal rashes, and we took a look at pediatric syncope with Dr. Fananapazir.

This week's grand rounds started off with our EMS team represented by Dr. McMullan updating us on new EMS stroke protocols, an upcoming trial for pre-hospital ketamine use, as well as a refresher on notification calls.  This was followed by Dr. Shaw, who made his grand rounds lecture debut discussing the diagnostic and clinical utility of lactate.  Drs. Harty and Toth then went mano-a-mano in another installment of the CPC lecture series, during which they discuss the presentation, workup and management of carotid cavernous fistula.  Dr. Gorder then presented her clinical soap box, using the example of NG tube placement for SBO as a platform for addressing the impact of dogma within medicine.  Our peds EM colleagues then steered the ship for the final 2 hours, discussing 2 oral boards cases (fussiness in a newborn and HSP) as well as putting on a pediatric trauma simulation.

This week's Grand Rounds began with Quarterly Sim led by Dr. LaFollette who walked us through a case of cardiogenic shock and neutropenic fever. Dr. Curry led us through an oral boards triple case with an unstable MCC, a FB ingestion and perforated viscous. Dr. Hill presented an eOrals case of thyroid storm. Lastly was PEM-EM combined conference, led by Dr. Wurster Ovalle, which focused on the treatment of pediatric DKA with a special focus on cerebral edema.

This week we started out with a great presentation updating our Emergency KT and approach to alcohol withdrawal from Drs. Soria and Whitford. Drs. Brent and Curry updated us on the Southwest Ohio EMS Protocols and Dr. Neel gave us a wonderful overview of approach to peripheral neuropathies. We rounded out the day with Peds Simulation addressing CAH, congenital heart disease, and treating malnutrition in a remote setting.

This week we had a special visit from Dr. Darren Braude from the University of New Mexico Department of Emergency Medicine to speak on special topics in airway management. He introduced us to the idea of Rapid Sequence Airway (RSA) and other novel thoughts on extraglottic devices.  We then had a chance to dive in to our regularly scheduled program with topics ranging from tuberculosis to ED operations to complex febrile seizure.  Enjoy!
