In this post, we will discuss in depth the work up of VTE in the pregnant patient, which often requires slightly different risk stratification tools. We will also discuss various treatment options for VTE in pregnancy and the post partum period.

Dr. Della Porta then gave us the rundown on different blood products and using TEG. We discussed PPROM, Breech delivery, and neonatal resuscitation with Dr. Crawford. The CPC showdown with Dr. Minges and Dr. Brower ended as a case of Hyperleukocystosis and Leukostasis. We ended the day with a talk from our PEM colleagues on inborn errors of metabolism.

One case ended up being a purulent pericardial effusion while the other was an LV freewall rupture. Dr. Sabedra Expanded our knowledge on how to better care for pregnant and breast feeding patients and how to be a support co-worker to our pregnant and breast feeding colleges. Lastly, Dr. Frankenfeld walked us through some of the data around when patients leave against medical advice, how to try to avoid this, and how to appropriately counsel our patients.

We finished our day with an excellent discussion on prenatal mental health care with Dr. Wolochatiuk in her R4 Case Follow Up and on uncommon causes of disorientation in Dr. Zalesky’s Taming the SRU lecture.

Dr. Fermann gave us operations updates for the CEC. Dr. Dave Thompson discussed quality improvement, root cause analysis, and the Pareto Principle. Dr. Tillotson walked us through the types of hypertension seen in pregnancy and how to manage these patients. Dr. Walsh found a sandwich in a patient’s airway. Dr. Jarrell discussed the exciting specialty called Social Emergency Medicine. Dr. Koehler showed us how to use a Minnesota tube for massive UGIB. Dr. Milligan discussed complex cardiac devices including IABP, Impella, and LVAD. Dr. Hassani reviewed post partum headaches and evidence on neuroprotective intubation. And lastly, Dr. Gleimer made us exercise our System 1 and System 2 thinking.
