Another week, another great Grand Rounds line-up at UCEM. We start off with our monthly Mortality and Morbidity Conference led by Chief Resident Dr. Finney. This session covers cases from the month of April- including the treatment of a canine in the SRU. One of our SRU leaders, Dr. Chhabria, shares the changing landscape of cardiac arrest management using ECMO. Next up, Dr. Thompson helps us reflect on the self-talk that we engage in on a daily basis and offers advice on how to improve our mindset- especially when we are on-shift. We learn from Dr. Kotei how to better ED proceduralists when encountering patients with ascites and/or pleural effusions. We end with Dr. Hajdu challenging Dr. Baez to solve a puzzling case of progressive vision loss in a otherwise healthy young patient.

We had a jam packed grand rounds this week, which started off with a simulation and ultrasound demonstration from our AirCare team. Next Dr. Vaughan took us through the dermatologic emergencies we cannot miss, and Dr. Ferreri discussed why every decompensated patient should receive an sonographic waves for assessment. We continued with our third installment of Landmark Studies of EM, covering the important papers on traumatic resuscitations. Finally, Dr. Bryant took us through a global health inspired case and Dr. Otten taught us about the medications that can be toxic to pediatrics in small doses.

This week’s grand rounds was packed with education! We started off the day with our morbidity and mortality conference which was led by chief resident, Dr. Stark. She discussed multiple high yield cases including immunosuppressed patients with fever, subarachnoid hemorrhage, complex trauma resuscitations, stridor in the adult, posterior circulation stroke, and finally an interesting case of Lemierre syndrome. Following M&M, Dr. Wolski took on Dr. Broadstock in an epic clinical pathologic case where the ultimate diagnosis in a child with abdominal pain was a bezoar. This was then followed by Dr. Newton’s R1 Diagnostic and Therapeutics lecture on Troubleshooting tubes in the ED including G-tubes, foley catheters, and suprapubic catheters. Finally, we wrapped up the day with R3 small group sessions. Dr. Harward led a session on ***. Meanwhile, Dr. Moulds discussed pharmacotherapy. Last but certainly not least, Dr. Sobocinski reviewed ***. All around, an excellent day at UCEM Grand Rounds!

We start off with in-flight emergencies, including changes to physiology and what equipment is available to you on most commercial flights, with Dr. Urbanowicz. Followed by a literature-filled debate between Drs. Lane and McDonough on the utility of CT pan-scans in trauma patients. With the help of Dr. Shewakramani, we all learn how to better recognize and care for patients with sepsis. Lastly, Dr. Wright introduces us to the science of reliability and how to design processes in healthcare to be more reliable, with the ultimate goal of improving our care of patients.
