This week’s Grand Rounds was kicked off with our inaugural “The Art of EM” lecture that included a panel of our esteemed non-UC trained faculty members Drs. Lang, Minges, D.Thompson, Adan, and Stolz. Dr. Gillespie then expertly led us through hand infections in her R1 Clinical Knowledge lecture. Drs. Comiskey & Crawford took us on a deep dive of the literature surrounding the evaluation and management of DVTs. Lastly, our PEM colleagues walked us through a great video-simulation case series on critical pediatric cardiac pathology!

This week’s edition of grand rounds featured some amazing lectures! We practiced pitching ideas in our leadership curriculum then the newest QI/KT pathway was revealed by Drs. Chuko and Goff. Dr Gawron taught us about medical causes of trauma and Dr. Kein gave us an amazing lecture on cyanotic congenital heart diseases. We finished off with Dr. Shewakramani giving an amazing wellness lecture about his BAYLEAF method for dealing with stress in the ED.

This week’s Grand Rounds began with a practical discussion of the CBC and differential by Dr. Hassani. Dr. Hughes and Thompson led a fantastic CPC on a case of myxedema coma, and Dr. Whitford discussed CT over-utilization in the emergency department. We finished the day with our pediatrics colleagues who walked us through anxiety-provoking cases of aortic coarctation, bacterial tracheitis, and neonatal jaundice. Check it out!

Dr. Stolz started Grand Rounds off with a great talk on lung ultrasound. Our consultant of the month, Dr. Hebbeler-Clark, gave a talk on patient safety and swarms. Dr. Lipshaw, a Peds-EM fellow, discussed the differential, evaluation, and management of congenital heart disease babies in the Emergency Department. Finally, Dr. Teuber ended with an interesting discussion on priapism.

Small groups covered everything from ACLS logistics to shoulder US to Minnesota tube insertion.

This week we started out with a great presentation updating our Emergency KT and approach to alcohol withdrawal from Drs. Soria and Whitford. Drs. Brent and Curry updated us on the Southwest Ohio EMS Protocols and Dr. Neel gave us a wonderful overview of approach to peripheral neuropathies. We rounded out the day with Peds Simulation addressing CAH, congenital heart disease, and treating malnutrition in a remote setting.

EKG Changes

  • According to the AHA, there are no diagnostic EKG changes for NSTEMI
  • ST elevations in II, III and aVF  with depression in V2 represents and inferior-posterior STEMI
  • ST depressions in the precordial leads may represent posterior MI
  • Continuous ST segment trend monitoring may pick up very dynamic ischemic changes (though this is almost never done anymore)
