This week Drs. Harty & Gauger walked us through the literature surrounding the care of the patient in cardiac arrest as part of their Quality Improvement & Knowledge Translation project. Dr. Kristiana Kaufmann, a visiting professor from Wayne State, provided us a look at Global Health opportunities. Our Quarterly Simulation session, lead by Dr. Bryant, was a case of a 15 year old with new onset SOB and polyarthralgias. Lastly Drs. Stettler & LaFollette provided us with mock oral boards cases.

This week Dr. Carleton kicked off a lecture series on the pediatric airway by discussing some anatomic and physiologic challenges as well as predictors of difficulty. In the latest installment of our Global Health lecture series, Dr. Lagasse gave us a great review on the unique uses of point of care ultrasound in a resource limited setting. Our R1 Diagnostics curriculum was continue by Dr. Gleimer who discussed the use of PFTs in the ED setting and Drs. Ham & Wright finished things up with an altered mental status CPC presentation.

In the penultimate Grand Rounds of 2017 Drs. Klaszky and Spigner gave us an in-depth look of the evidence behind treatment of asthma in the ED and walked up through their new QI/KT pathway. Dr. Summers provided a great review of the resuscitation of the burn victim. We closed things out with our quarterly PEM-EM combined simulation sessions which included cases of children with difficulty breathing, seizure and stridor.

We had a jam packed Grand Rounds this week kicked off by Dr. Carleton's airway lecture discussing tools to maximize fiberoptic intubation success. Next Drs. Roche and Plash led us through wilderness medicine small groups discussing plant ingestions and creative extrication techniques. Drs. Murphy-Crews and Bryant participated in a CPC case with a seizing neonate followed by Dr. O'Brien's discussion of blunt neck trauma. Next Dr. Cotton presented data on physician burnout and how to combat it while Dr. Li wrapped things up with an overview of Kawasaki's disease.

Dr. Ludmer kicked things off with this month's Morbidity & Mortality conference where we discussed C. Diff, spinal cord compression, LP in the setting of anticoagulation and cardiac arrest with an LVAD. Dr. Stettler led the next segment of our longitudinal leadership curriculum with a look at the mentor/mentee relationship. We finished up with a soapbox lecture by Dr. Titone on conflict resolution and an R3 follow up by Dr. Bernardoni who discussed the crashing patient with right ventricular failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

This week Dr. Gottula gave us a great in-depth explanation into alloimmunization and the use of RhoGAM in the ED. Dr. Owens and Faryar participated in a CPC centered around a sickle cell patient with knee pain. Dr. Asghar from orthopedics discussed the management of spine fractures in the ED. Our visiting professor Dr. Gail D'Onofrio discussed the ongoing opioid abuse issues facing the country. Dr. Hall discussed industrial injuries while Dr. Polsinelli wrapped things up with a discussion about how to use EMR to report core measures.

Next we headed off to EM-Neuro combined conference where Dr. Neel discussed headaches that kill, headaches that maim and headaches that annoy. Dr. Thompson walked us through a case of vertebral artery dissection and Dr. Liebman kicked off our wellness curriculum. Dr. Roche finished things up with a discussion the nuances of toxicology in the community.

This week's Grand Rounds began with Quarterly Sim led by Dr. LaFollette who walked us through a case of cardiogenic shock and neutropenic fever. Dr. Curry led us through an oral boards triple case with an unstable MCC, a FB ingestion and perforated viscous. Dr. Hill presented an eOrals case of thyroid storm. Lastly was PEM-EM combined conference, led by Dr. Wurster Ovalle, which focused on the treatment of pediatric DKA with a special focus on cerebral edema.

This week was filled with lots of high yield quick hit Grand Rounds sessions. Dr. Stolz kicked it off with her first official lecture as UC EM's Ultrasound Director with a talk on how to use ultrasound in resuscitation of the shock patient. Next Dr. Knight went over some procedural complications and then switched gears to pearls on how to give a stellar lecture. Dr. Lagasse walked us through a case of ascending cholangitis followed by Drs. Colmer, Soria and Continenza who led small groups focused on care of the geriatric patient. Dr. Toth followed with management of eye complaints in the community and Dr. Shaw wrapped things up with an update on the opioid epidemic in Ohio.
