Another week, another great Grand Rounds line-up at UCEM. We start off with our monthly Mortality and Morbidity Conference led by Chief Resident Dr. Finney. This session covers cases from the month of April- including the treatment of a canine in the SRU. One of our SRU leaders, Dr. Chhabria, shares the changing landscape of cardiac arrest management using ECMO. Next up, Dr. Thompson helps us reflect on the self-talk that we engage in on a daily basis and offers advice on how to improve our mindset- especially when we are on-shift. We learn from Dr. Kotei how to better ED proceduralists when encountering patients with ascites and/or pleural effusions. We end with Dr. Hajdu challenging Dr. Baez to solve a puzzling case of progressive vision loss in a otherwise healthy young patient.

This week we started off with a riveting M&M presented by Dr. Kletsel, where we discussed massive GI bleeds, renal abscesses, and more. This was followed by a face off for the ages between Drs. Beyde and Bonomo on an uncommon presentation of thyrotoxicosis. Finally, a group of R4s led us through an educational simulation of BRASH syndrome and some informational oral boards style cases.

This week in Grand rounds, we had some case reflection from R4 Dr.Zalesky reminding us to avoid anchoring, be aware of our biases for or against patients, and avoid creating a rude work environment. Dr. Moulds and Dr. Goel had a CPC showdown with a case of Cecal Diverticulitis, while Dr. Artiga gave us the low down on Lung Ultrasound in the ED. We wrapped up the day with an R4 lead simulation on a case of Thyrotoxicosis.

Stark and Koehler go head to head in a CPC case of HSV meningoencephalitis, and Drs. This week Dr. Freiermuth showed us how to create a research project. Drs. Tillotson and Makinen discussed the evidence on open fracture management. The R2 CPC between Drs. Ramsay and Nagle taught us an important lesson on HIV and ITP. Finally, Drs. Iparraguirre, Li, Makinen, and Mand created a simulation to teach management of a pediatric nicotinic poisoning.

In this week’s Grand Rounds we discussed spinal fractures and imaging of knees and hips with our R1s, Drs. Kimmel and Gressick. Dr. Hassani from the R2 class took on Dr. LaFollette with a case of thyrotoxicosis presenting as a-fib with RVR in his CPC, and Dr. Koehler from the R3 Class taught us about heroin/naloxone-induced pulmonary edema. Dr. Golden from the R4 class discussed Fournier’s Gangrene complicated by sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy, and finally our trauma surgery colleague Dr. Pritts discussed some hot topics in trauma.
