We start off with in-flight emergencies, including changes to physiology and what equipment is available to you on most commercial flights, with Dr. Urbanowicz. Followed by a literature-filled debate between Drs. Lane and McDonough on the utility of CT pan-scans in trauma patients. With the help of Dr. Shewakramani, we all learn how to better recognize and care for patients with sepsis. Meanwhile, Dr. Roche teaches us about all various bites/stings- including marine species, scorpions, and mosquitos! This week was jam pack in Grand Rounds. We covered best practice tips for POCUS and Cardiac Arrest with Dr. Stolz. Dr. Pensak talked with us about the Emergency Department Implications of the Dobbs v Jackson. We buffed up our teaching skills with Dr. Santen and “Not another Boring Lecture”. Dr. Roche and Wilderness Medicine Faculty taught us how to improvise important medical equipment. To end the day, Dr. Kiser showed us how to better care for and treat the pain of patients with chronic medical conditions.

We had an outstanding week in Grand Rounds, led off by a visiting lecturer and UC EM Class of 2013, Dr. Renee Salas. Dr. Salas is currently Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical school and a Yerby Fellow at the Center for Climate, Health, and Global Environment. Her talk was entitled “Climate Crisis and Clinical Practice - Implications for Emergency Medicine.” Next, Dr. Baez presented a fascinating Ultrasound Grand Rounds with Ultrasound M&M. Drs. Frederick and Walsh led us through their new clinical pathway for Non-Pregnant Vaginal Bleeding in their QI/KT. Dr. Klaszky gave his R4 Clinical Capstone lecture on how to make effective presentations.

Roche and Plash led us through wilderness medicine small groups discussing plant ingestions and creative extrication techniques. Drs. Murphy-Crews and Bryant participated in a CPC case with a seizing neonate followed by Dr. O'Brien's discussion of blunt neck trauma. Next Dr. Cotton presented data on physician burnout and how to combat it while Dr. Li wrapped things up with an overview of Kawasaki's disease.

This week Dr. Gorder led us off with August's M&M cases, followed by Dr. Betz giving us great in-depth example of a proper joint exam from the perspective of sports medicine. Dr. Makinen gave us a talk of accidental hypothermia, Dr. Ludmer examined the link between chronic pain and depression and how concurrent treatment can help our patients quality of life. Dr. Wright gave us an update on UCEM Global Health and Dr. Colmer gave us a look into the critical care management of a DKA case.
