This week in grand rounds we started off reviewing the importance of matching the minute ventilation post intubation with airway master Dr. Carleton. We also reviewed salicylate overdose treatment with Dr. Owens as well as common and life threatening SCUBA emergencies with Dr. Comiskey. Finally, we finished the week off with a severe calcium channel blocker overdose and reviewed the treatment strategies to combat this extremely deadly overdose.

Next, Dr. Gauger took us through the toxicology and treatment of calcium channel blocker overdose. Dr. Bernardoni had a fantastic capstone combing a number of high yield visual diagnosis. Check out this week’s recap of Grand Rounds! Dr. Tim Murphy took us through some fascinating cases with Morbidity and Mortality Conference. Next, we got to dive deep into toxicology. Dr. Kelli Jarrell led us through a case she had of a TCA overdose, Dr. Shawn Hassani taught us about Beta Blocker and Calcium Channel Blocker overdose, and Dr. Woods Curry took us through a oral boards session during Quarterly Sim reviewing Aspirin toxicity. Quarterly Simulation also had an oral boards case discussing inferior STEMI complicated by complete heart block, as well as an awesome simulation teaching the fundamentals of teamwork and closed loop communication by having a lucky R3 run a code with a blindfold on. In this week’s Grand Rounds, Dr. Polsinelli started us off with the diagnosis and management of aortoenteric fistula. We then discussed burnout and failure in our wellness curriculum in a small group setting, and heard from our colleagues in pharmacy about high-dose insulin therapy for calcium channel and beta blocker overdose. Dr. Roche led us in our Mastering Minor Care curriculum with a discussion of all things arthrocentesis, and we closed with a great combined PEM/EM simulation session and oral boards practice.

Dr. Grosso kicked off Grand Rounds this week with March M&M by diving deep into some core content, including BB and CCA overdoses, influenza, massive transfusion, post-intubation hypotension, and neurological catastrophes causing cardiac arrest. Dr. O'Brien broke down coagulopathy of liver disease and DIC for us while Dr. Golden taught us about febrile seizures. Drs. McKee and Colmer talked through the evidence behind their CPQE pathway on vent management in obstructive lung disease. Drs. Liebman and Powell went head to head in a CPC case about sternal osteomyelitis to round out another excellent week of learning.
