We had an excellent Grand Rounds this week! Dr. Yates led our monthly Morbidity & Mortality Conference discussing pathology ranging from Dabigatran overdose to acute limb ischemia. We had an exciting CPC with hypomagnesemia presenting as new onset psychosis with Drs. Joshi & Lang. Finally, Dr. Gallen led a lecture and small group discussion on tracheostomies and their complications.
Read MoreWe started off the day strong with a R4 Case Follow Up lecture presented by Dr. Yates who led an excellent discussion on psychosis, including maintaining a broad differential for secondary psychosis and appropriate management. We then transitioned to an R1 Clinical Knowledge lecture where Dr. Segev guided us through interstitial lung disease and fibrosis ranging from epidemiology to diagnosis and treatment. This then followed by a hand-on high acuity low opportunity procedure review including esophageal balloon tamponade, transvenous pacemaker placement, and chest wall escharotomy. The hands-on sessions continued into the afternoon where our CCHMC colleagues led a simulation on neonatal shock. Overall, a great day at UCEM Grand Rounds!

Ferreri and Skrobut as they battled out a case of mysterious altered mental status during the crowd favorite, CPC. Dr. Pulvino reminded us that not all rashes are simple through her case follow up and Dr. Gobble took us on a deep dive of the diagnosis and management of gastroparesis and cyclic vomiting syndrome. Finally, we closed out the day with lessons in nasal endoscopy and cricothyrotomy from the airway guru himself, Dr. Steven Carleton.

We started off the day with our visiting lecturer Dr. Noble who presented a some excellent pearls on how to better incorporate lung ultrasound in the management of our patients in the ED. Next up Dr. Mand and Dr. Lagasse went head to head in our clincopathologic case series. Dr. Lagasse nailed the diagnosis of Dengue hemorrhagic fever and Dr. Mand then educated us on how it can progress to shock. To follow came Dr. Pulvino who lead us through some small group cases on the utilization of the PERC criteria and Wells score in the evaluation of patient with a potential pullmonary embolism. Next was Dr. Connelly who presented on the evaluation and management of patients with conditions resulting from ascent to high altitudes. To wrap up the day Dr. Lipshaw demystified the pediatric rash patient.

Dr. Shah then gave his R4 Clinical Soap Box on the utility of ultrasound in cardiac arrest, and the conference finished with Dr. Whitford giving his R3 Taming the SRU case follow up.

Our pediatric EM colleague Dr. Valentino then walked us through current recommendations on the approach to the febrile infant. In the last hour, Dr. Iparraguirre gave us a lecture on the approach to rashes in the ED. The conference then concluded with an R4 clinical soap box lecture by Dr. Dang on the history of cannabis and medical marijuana, as well as the research behind its current use.
