We started off this Wednesday with the crowd favorite M&M by Dr. Kletsel covering fantastic learning cases. This was followed by an expert discussion of neuromuscular weakness by Dr. Onuzuruike, and a quick hit EKG lecture by Dr. Urbanowicz on EKG artifacts. We wrapped up this day of discussion with our social emergency medicine grand rounds and our quarterly Landmark Studies of EM focusing on critical care.

We moved into alcohol use disorder treatment with Dr. Ryan detailing medical management for abstinence that can be started in the ED. We moved into a trip down memory lane with Dr. Baez and 10 cases that haunt her with the lessons she has learned along the way. Dr. Baxter gave us his thoughts on evaluating patients using clinical gestalt vs clinical decision rules. We moved into neuroimaging with our expert critical care/emergency medicine attending Dr. Knight and some cases with interesting CT/MRI findings. Finally, we wrapped up with oral boards detailing 2 sick patients: one with aspiration pneumonia developing ARDS and one with neuroleptic malignant syndrome. See you all next week!

Dr. Tillotson walked us through the types of hypertension seen in pregnancy and how to manage these patients. Dr. Walsh found a sandwich in a patient’s airway. Dr. Jarrell discussed the exciting specialty called Social Emergency Medicine. Dr. Koehler showed us how to use a Minnesota tube for massive UGIB. Dr. Milligan discussed complex cardiac devices including IABP, Impella, and LVAD. Dr. Hassani reviewed post partum headaches and evidence on neuroprotective intubation. And lastly, Dr. Gleimer made us exercise our System 1 and System 2 thinking.
