Dr. Salas is currently Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical school and a Yerby Fellow at the Center for Climate, Health, and Global Environment. Her talk was entitled “Climate Crisis and Clinical Practice - Implications for Emergency Medicine.” Next, Dr. Baez presented a fascinating Ultrasound Grand Rounds with Ultrasound M&M. Drs. Frederick and Walsh led us through their new clinical pathway for Non-Pregnant Vaginal Bleeding in their QI/KT. Dr. Klaszky gave his R4 Clinical Capstone lecture on how to make effective presentations.
Read MoreThis week in grand rounds started off with Dr. Humphries reviewing the evidence of various interventions in traumatic cardiac arrest and providing a clear algorithm to follow in patients who suffer blunt traumatic cardiac arrest. We then had an in depth discussion on the approach to the encephalopathic patient in the Emergency Department. Dr. Bryant then presented some interesting cases that she had on her most recent trip to Guyana, followed by Dr. Ramsey’s in depth review of the emergent complications of acute leukemia. We finished off the day with our pediatric Emergency Medicine colleagues who led us through a simulation and oral boards cases.

Dr. Owens then gave us a detailed review on a probably-more-common-than-you-think parasite that has started popping up in the US, and our excellent ED pharmacists gave us a crash course on common antidotes to various poisonings, overdoses, and bites that we frequently see in the ED. Finally, Dr. Ham finished up with a review of the importance of chronic hypertension in our ED population and how we can make a difference especially those with limited access to care.

Dr. Wyrick, from the Department of Orthopedics, talked about his experiences on his global health trip to Tanzania. Finally, the week wrapped up with Drs. Iparraguirre, Jensen, and Lane leading small group workshops on orthopedic injuries.

Read MoreWe had another excellent Grand Rounds this week! Dr. Carleton started us off with some thrilling airway cases in his continuing Airway Grand Rounds series. Next, we were transported to Africa for a case based discussion on Global Health with Drs Owens, Sabedra, Ventura, and Murphy-Crews. Dr. Skrobut and Chris Shaw then took us through a deep dive of the current literature on the management of upper GI bleeds. Dr. Ham then taught us about ACE-I induced angioedema through the lens of an amazing case of a patient who required a cricothyrotomy to save her life! Next up, we had Dr. Gleimer go up against Dr. Faryar in our Clincal Pathological Case series where we a classic presentation of Addison’s disease in a pediatric patient. Dr. Hunt then led us through small group discussions on the application of the HEART Score in patients presenting to the ED with chest pain. We wrapped up the day with Dr. Isaac Shaw who presented a the management of SVT in a complicated patient.

Dr. Alwan then provided us an in-depth look at the often untold challenges of life as a refugee as well as the challenges we face in providing care for these patients. This was followed by Dr. Randolph who presented a case of an incredibly complicated patient with a pulmonary embolism to highlight the steps in management of a decompensating patient with a pulmonary embolism before you initiate thrombolysis. Next up was Dr. Gottula and Dr. Hinckley who went head to head with a challenging presentation of acute aortic dissection as part of our CPC lecture series. Dr. Leech then finished up the day with a case based discussion on the utility of the Kocher Criteria in the evaluation of child with an acutely painful hip.
