After a brief hiatus we returned to grand rounds this week and started off with an in depth discussion on common overdoses and treatments in the ED with our guest lecturer and expert toxicologist Dr. Gillian Beauchamp. We then got some hands on time with the new hand held ultrasound machines that are now available on Air Care as well as reviewed pre-hospital management of traumatic pneumothoaces with Dr. Humphries. Finally, airway guru Dr. Carleton took us on a deep dive on airway management in angioedema.

/Check out this week’s recap of Grand Rounds! Dr. Tim Murphy took us through some fascinating cases with Morbidity and Mortality Conference. Next, we got to dive deep into toxicology. Dr. Kelli Jarrell led us through a case she had of a TCA overdose, Dr. Shawn Hassani taught us about Beta Blocker and Calcium Channel Blocker overdose, and Dr. Woods Curry took us through a oral boards session during Quarterly Sim reviewing Aspirin toxicity. Quarterly Simulation also had an oral boards case discussing inferior STEMI complicated by complete heart block, as well as an awesome simulation teaching the fundamentals of teamwork and closed loop communication by having a lucky R3 run a code with a blindfold on. Grand rounds this week started off with a review of the EMTALA law with Dr. Hinckley, as well as some case discussion. This was followed by a presentation from our clinical pharmacists, PharmD's Nicole Harger and Madeline Stephens, on anti-epileptic medications and their uses, as well as an update on our medication supplies in the ED. Drs. Murphy-Crews and Scanlon then presented their evidenced based algorithm for the management of STEMI, followed by our combined peds EM lecture with Dr. Kevin Overmann on the evaluation of the pale child and pediatric anemia. This was followed by Dr. Ludmer's R4 case follow up/best of residency cases. The day finished up with Dr. Sim Mand presenting her clinical diagnostics lecture on the assessment and management of the non-pregnant patient with abnormal uterine bleeding.

As 2016 comes to a close, Dr. McKean taught us about transfusion related lung injury, PEs, TCA overdoses, and the use of platelets in ICH during M&M. We learned the basics about the renal panel with Dr. Owens. Drs. Betz and Summers battled it out over drug-induced hepatitis and Dr. McKee taught us about Crypococcal Meningitis in her case follow-up. The year wrapped up with another Levy Cup Pre-season battle lead by Drs. Boyer and Winders.
