Compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that can present after a variety of insults, ranging from those we commonly encounter in the ED (fractures, crush injuries) to more rare clinical presentations (snake bites, electrocution). The initial elevation of compartment pressures can be secondary to internal (ex. bleeding, swelling, fluid overload) and/or external (ex. compressive devices, burn eschar) factors. This week was the last grand rounds of the academic year. We started off with the monthly Morbidity and Mortality conference led by Dr. Colmer. This was followed up by a CPC on Infectious Mononucleosis from Dr. Jensen and Dr. Stolz. Dr. Urbanowicz then discussed if there is a use of platelet function studies in the Emergency Department. The day ended with Dr. Murphy-Crews describing a fascinating case of severe hypothermia and outlining the interventions available to us in the ED for these patients. See you next week!

Dr. McKinney from our MFM service started us off with some pearls of 2nd and 3rd trimester complications and management. Drs Murphy, Liebman, McKee and Whitford taught small groups about tips and tricks of extensor tendon repair, hip ultrasound and compartment pressures. Dr. Hughes gave us a talk on plain film utility in the ED and finally Drs. Scanlon and Doerning faced off in a CPC of a case of HELLP syndrome.
